A simple salsa is one of those things you just have to have in your back pocket. The recipe I mean, not the salsa. That would be an awkward thing to keep in your pocket!

Or maybe it’s the new thing. Instead of pocket pizza, or pocket snacks, you’ll have pocket salsa! Add some chips to the other pocket.

Okay, anyways, getting distracted here. My point is…this simple (but delicious) salsa is so easy, you’ll definitely want to make it over and over again.

It’s a versatile basic salsa recipe, that you can make as written, or easily tweak to your tastes. More notes on that below!

Plus, this salsa uses canned tomatoes- which means you can make it year round without waiting for the best or ripest tomatoes available in the summer months. Chips and salsa in December? No prob. Tacos with homemade salsa in March? Go for it!

Once you know how to make homemade salsa (with canned tomatoes or even fresh!) you’ll never want to go back to store-bought!

Ingredients You’ll Need For This Homemade Salsa:

Canned tomatoes and a few fresh ingredients make this homemade salsa easy peasy!

You’ll need the following:

  • 14.5 oz. can diced fire roasted tomatoes, drained
  • 1/2 of a medium white onion (about 1/2 cup large chunks)
  • 1- 2 cloves garlic (preference)
  • 1 tbsp lime juice
  • 2 tbsp fresh cilantro
  • 1 jalapeño, chopped in half (devein and remove the seeds if you don’t want it too spicy) OR 1 small pepper of choice, chopped in half
  • salt to taste (I did ½ tsp)

That’s it! 7 ingredients to make this delicious salsa.

A few ingredient notes:

This salsa recipe uses canned tomatoes, white onion, and garlic as the primary flavor notes. I like my salsa pretty garlicky, so I used 2 cloves. But if you prefer something with less of a garlic flavor, feel free to use just one!

Same with the onion- I like the onion notes in this recipe, but you can use less (or even more!) depending on how much you like it. I would suggest adding at least 1/4 cup of onion chunks though to get that good salsa flavor.

You can also use a different type of onion- red will be slightly more pungent and onion-y, or you could use Vidalia onion for a slightly more sweet profile.

Cilantro…some people love it, some hate it! I am in the middle- I like a bit, but not too much. In this recipe I use 2 tbsp, but if you hate it, feel free to leave it out. If you love it, you can add a bit more!

And finally, the jalapeno. If you don’t like it too spicy, but want a little bit of heat, you can devein the pepper and take out the seeds before adding it. You can also substitute an equal-ish amount of a different type of pepper, spicy or not, in it’s place.

Equipment Needed for Making Homemade Salsa:

You really don’t need too much here! A knife and chopping board to roughly chop some of the ingredients, a juicer for the lime, a tablespoon, and a food processor. That’s it!

Oh, and you’ll want something to store it in of course- I like to use these jars for storing in the fridge!

Once you have all your ingredients ready, you simply add them into the food processor and pulse for about 10-12 times until they are chopped fine and mixed together.

You can eat it right away- but if you can wait, I suggest putting the salsa in a container in the fridge until it’s cold. This lets the flavors meld together really well!

How long does homemade salsa last?

This salsa should last about a week properly stored in your fridge. I like to use glass jars for storing, but any air tight container should do fine.

How can I make this salsa spicy?

Depending on how hot your jalapeno is, it will have some spice as the recipe is written. But to amp it up even more, you can simply replace the jalapeno with a hotter pepper of choice. Serrano is a popular choice, but you can use your favorite.

Can I use fresh tomatoes instead of canned?

Yes! I really like the fire-roasted flavor of the canned tomatoes but if you want to use fresh, then I suggest roasting them in your oven and dicing them up when they are cool. Then you can use them in the recipe as written. You can use about 1 – 1 1/2 lbs of fresh tomatoes for this.

There you have it! Homemade salsa in minutes.

Now that you know how to make salsa with canned tomatoes, will you try it? I think you’ll love it!

    1. Hi Brenda, I have not canned it myself, but you probably could! You would need to make a larger batch if you want to make multiple jars. If you try it, let me know how it turns out!
